Food truck owners feel ripple effects of surging gas prices

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - Spiking gas prices are setting off a chain reaction that could soon hit consumers in more ways than one.

The average price of gas in Milwaukee rose another 10 cents, putting pressure not only on drivers but also on businesses that rely on fuel to operate especially food trucks.

Gas prices are surging, driven by overseas tensions and refinery issues, and small business owners say they are feeling the impact immediately.

Lupe Moreno, owner of Cocina Filipina and Modern Maki Sushi, said just filling up one of her trucks has become a major expense.

“To fill up our truck we’re spending over $140 each time just to fill up a tank,” she said.

Those rising costs are forcing tough decisions about where and whether to operate.

“We’re willing to go out 45 minutes to an hour and a half for a regular event, but to be quite honest now we’re really picking and choosing what events we’re going to do because we’re like wow is it worth even the gas to do that,” she said.

And the expenses don’t stop once they arrive.

“A longer event you’re filling up your generator with regular gas a couple times and that adds up,” she said.

Moreno said the rising cost of fuel is also increasing what suppliers charge to deliver ingredients.

“Our fish companies have said they have to accommodate for how much it costs to deliver the actual product,” she said.

Instead of raising prices for customers, Moreno said she is adjusting her business behind the scenes to offset those costs.

“It already hurts as a business owner to have any sort of waste and now we’re like what can we do to mitigate the costs. We’ve also decided to take some items off of our menu,” she said.

With one of her trucks running on diesel and prices nearing $6 a gallon in some areas Moreno said the pressure continues to build.

“It’s just an unfortunate time in the food truck industry but make sure you’re still supporting small,” she said.
