MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police say an 8-year-old child was shot near 60th and Helena Wednesday, Dec. 11.
Police say the girl was shot in the stomach while inside a home around 4:30 p.m.
A bullet hole can be seen in the side of the home where the shooting occurred.
Neighbors were shocked to hear a little girl was shot in their neighborhood.
"I heard the police and stuff coming around and we all went outside to see what was happening," said neighbor Jim Marshall. "I heard her crying as they were taking her out on the stretcher. She cried a lot."
Marshall says his family knows the girl who was shot.
"She used to play with my son every day," he said.
Authorities have taken a 21-year-old Milwaukee man into custody for recklessly endangering safety. The case will be presented to the Milwaukee County DA's Office in the coming days.
The 8-year-old was taken to Children's Wisconsin and is expected to survive.
