Mother of reckless driving victim sues Milwaukee, police chief over son's death

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The mother of a man killed in a reckless driving crash is suing the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, and Police Officer Fernando Vences over MPD's pursuit policy, which she says resulted in her son's death.

Amari Smith was killed in February of 2024 when a driver fled police, blew through a red light, and slammed into Smith's car. Police say the driver has been driving recklessly.

The Milwaukee Police Department's pursuit policy has since been changed

Now, speed can't be the only factor -- there has to be one other example of dangerous driving before a chase can start.

Another change is that officers will no longer face discipline for ending a pursuit.
