Missy Hughes drops out of governor's race, endorses Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez
CBS 58 MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Democratic gubernatorial candidate Missy Hughes announced Monday, June 22 that she is suspending her campaign and endorsing Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez ahead of the Aug. 11 Democratic primary.
In a statement, Hughes said she made the decision after considering the qualities and experience she believes are needed to be governor, citing Rodriguez's background as a Peace Corps volunteer, emergency room nurse and CDC intelligence officer. Hughes said she believes Rodriguez is the strongest candidate to win in November and build a broad coalition of voters.
"I deeply believe that Sara is the best candidate we can put forward to win in November, and to build an enduring coalition to address our state's most pressing challenges."
Hughes, who previously served as Wisconsin secretary of economic development, said she will continue looking for ways to serve the state, but not as governor.
She thanked her family and campaign team in the statement.
