MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- We like to think Milwaukee is known for its hospitality, especially for people who come downtown. This week, the workers who provide the hospitality are getting a little special treatment themselves.

"I often say that downtown is really...it's everybody's neighborhood," said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson joined the festivities at Red Arrow Park Monday, Aug. 18 to kick off the annual Downtown Employee Appreciate Week. Each day this week, people who work downtown will enjoy special gestures of gratitude.

Monday, workers got free coffee at Biggby's, a free lunch, and live music. What's more important, they were told in no uncertain terms how much they mean to the city.

"Downtown is the economic hub for the entire region so our businesses as well as our employees are so incredibly important to make our downtown the incredible neighborhood that it is," said Matt Dorner, Milwaukee Downtown CEO.
