Milwaukee's 55th Annual Juneteenth Day celebrations announced
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's 55th annual Juneteenth celebration is now 22 days away.
The party on June 19 seems to grow every year, and on Wednesday, a large group of organizers and partners gathered to tell us about it.
A press conference was held at Northcott Neighborhood House, host of Juneteenth Day. The holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, and in Milwaukee, the celebration has come to include a jubilee parade, a festival on the city's north side, a freedom ball, and more.
And for the fifth year, Juneteenth will go beyond a single day. A summer concert series is set for every Saturday, from June 20 through Aug. 29, featuring more than 50 artists at Clinton & Bernice Rose Park.
"It's really valuable to our community, because after June 19, a lot of times the conversation of Juneteenth ends," said Fred Collier, chairman of the summer concert series. "But this continues the conversation throughout the summer, just so everyone knows that we're embracing ourselves, we're embracing our culture, our community."
