MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- More than 360,000 veterans call Wisconsin home. On Memorial Day Monday, May 29, the Milwaukee VA honored those who served as well as those who paid the ultimate sacrifice at Wood National Cemetery.
At the service, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley expressed his gratitude to the nation's military members.
"Thank you to those who stood up to defend our country and to the families who constantly stand up to defend our country. You do what is necessary to uphold our freedoms and our way of life," Crowley said.
Crowley also talked about the sacrifice his own family has made. He shared that his uncle served in the Vietnam War, but never returned home.
The VA says it is continuing its work to identify the remains of those reported missing in action.
Officials estimate the remains of about 1,500 soldiers from Wisconsin, can and will be recovered.
