Milwaukee Public Schools unveils new fleet of electric buses
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is going electric. On Monday, June 8, the district unveiled its brand-new electric school buses.
The district-wide rollout aims to reduce transportation costs by moving away from diesel fuel, while also cutting back on emissions.
And with high gas prices, switching to electric comes at a good time.
"Fluctuating diesel prices cause issues to school budgets and electric vehicles and the way that we're modeling this today helps provide that stability and ensure that those budgets can be focused on the classroom," said MPS Superintendent Dr. Brenda Cassellius.
"It's been $800,000 more to the MPS budget in just the last three months," said Ben Schutzman, COO at Highland Electric Fleets.
MPS plans to roll out 150 electric buses in phases. The first 50 will be ready for students this fall.
