MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police are investigating a shots fired incident that took place Sunday, May 5 around 10:50 p.m. near S. Cesar Chavez and Scott Street.

Milwaukee police officers were deployed on foot in for Cinco de Mayo when a suspect fired shots in the area, subsequently striking an officer.

Officers reportedly did not return fire and no one else was struck.

The officer, a 29-year-old male with over one year of service, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries.

MPD has three persons of interest in custody and recovered two firearms; however, they are still seeking additional information. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Milwaukee police at (414) 935-7360 or remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS or P3 Tips online service.

The incident raises concerns for law enforcement regarding summer safety in Milwaukee.

MPD had extra officers deployed this weekend for Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said he's disappointed in those who make these events unsafe.

"An officer who was out standing, being vigilant, ensuring there was safety for those who want to be able to have a celebratory type of situation, unfortunately was shot. Unacceptable on all different type of levels," Chief Norman said early Monday.

MPD is pleading for people to stop using guns during celebrations

It's a concern every summer, with several large gatherings planned across the city.

"This is not something that we want to see every year, and I know that our city's tired of this," Norman said. We ask those who are interested in helping us out in regard to having these types of celebrations be peaceful and safe, please help us out."

MPD typically increases its presence throughout the city during the summer, especially for busy weekends.

Norman said it's everyone's responsibility to make safe choices.

"This is something our community does not want, this is something that we cannot tolerate within our city, and we need to ensure that we're going to do everything we can to impact this," he said. "It must stop. This violence needs to stop."
