Milwaukee Police honor young boy who died while shielding his little cousin from arson fire

Milwaukee -

The men and women of Milwaukee law enforcement will show great humility Tuesday night when they honor a little boy, gone to soon, along with their own rank and file for meritorious service.

Kevin Little will posthumously receive the Valorous Conduct Citizen Award.

The 10 year old shielded his 2 year old cousin Tae'najah during an arson fire back in October of 2015.

His grandmother had safely gotten the other children out of the house that night, but Kevin ran back into his cousin's bedroom.

We will never know why the couldn't get out.

But MPD says "We know he chose to stay rather than abandon his cousin."

Officer Jennifer J. Hall will receive the Purple Star Award.

She was injured during the unrest in Sherman Park last August.

As detailed in a statement from MPD:

"Officer Hall was dispatched to the Sherman Park neighborhood to gain control of a rioting crowd.  While traveling to the location, a rioter threw a large piece of concrete through the front passenger window of Officer Hall's squad car.  The concrete shattered the window and struck Officer Hall's head, causing a large laceration.  Officer Hall managed to maintain control of her squad car and drove a few blocks away where she met up with other officers.  Officer Hall was treated at the hospital where she received several stitches and was diagnosed with a concussion.  During this tense situation, Officer Hall was able to keep her emotions under control, maintain control of her squad, and drive herself to safety."

CBS 58's Michele McCormack, whose son is pursuing a career in law enforcement with the Security Forces of the USAF, will serve as emcee.
