Milwaukee Mumps cases raising concerns about vaccines

MILWAUKEE-There are four confirmed cases of mumps in Milwaukee. Two of the cases from UW Milwaukee.

The school is now offering free vaccines to students.

The news was surprising to many students who say they thought there was a vaccination.

According to the Center for Disease Control you're supposed to get two doses of the MMR vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella.

The first when you're between 12 to 15 months old.

The second between 4 to 6 years old.

But, Wisconsin parents can opt out.

And in the case of the UW M mumps cases, both students had the two doses, but it's believed they simply failed to work.

\"These immunizations, this one in particular is about 95 % effective,\" Dr. Julie Bonner of the Norris Health Center on campus told CBS 58.

The timing of the cases is also troublesome.

\"We're seeing it centered right now at the university level,\" Paul Biedryzcki of the Milwaukee Health Department explained. \"But with the end of school coming our concern now is that people don't take concern  to get vaccinated. They may spread this to their hometown.\"
