MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee private school is making changes after a federal investigation found it discriminated against children with disabilities.

Milwaukee Montessori School (MMS) has agreed to a $290,000 settlement with the US Department of Justice following an 18-month probe into violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Federal officials say the school denied admission and equal access to students with disabilities and failed to provide reasonable accommodations.

The school has not admitted liability but says it has updated its policies, implemented staff training, and brought in new leadership.

“Children with disabilities have the right to access the educational opportunities offered by private schools, including Montessori schools,” said Acting United States Richard Frohling. “This settlement is an important reminder that the ADA’s obligations extend to private schools and their treatment of students with disabilities.”

The US Attorney's Office says MMS will pay $240,000 to compensate those involved, as well as a civil penalty of $50,000 to the United States.

The DOJ will continue to monitor and provide support in the months ahead.
