MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 28-year-old Milwaukee man is facing multiple felony charges after a woman was shot during an argument outside a home on W. Michigan Street last month, according to a criminal complaint.

Terrance Houston is charged with first-degree reckless injury and two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Police responded to a shooting near 23rd and Michigan streets at around 12:17 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 and found a woman with a gunshot wound. That victim later told an officer, according to police, that she was seven months pregnant and had gone outside to check on her boyfriend when a man opened fire, hitting her in the abdomen.

Her unborn child was later pronounced dead. An autopsy to determine the cause of death is pending.

According to the complaint, witnesses told detectives that an earlier fight between two groups outside the home had been broken up, but the groups crossed paths again later that night. Witnesses are also cited as saying Houston pulled a handgun, fired into the ground, then fired several more shots toward the group as they ran away.

Houston told a detective he grabbed a firearm from his sister's bag when he saw the group running toward him, fired twice at the ground to scare them off, then chased them while still armed, the complaint says. He said he thought a bullet may have ricocheted and hit the victim.

He was arrested on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at a Milwaukee apartment where police found the handgun that he allegedly identified as the one used in the shooting.

Houston's initial appearance in court was on Wednesday, Sept. 2.
