MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- How do you control Milwaukee's reckless driving problems? That question has no single answer but the Milwaukee Common Council is working on it.

Friday, Sept. 1, the council approved a resolution asking for a change in state law that would allow Milwaukee police to impound vehicles after a driver's first reckless driving offense.

Right now, it takes several offenses before the car will be taken away.

The resolution passed, though Milwaukee Alderwoman Milele Coggs wanted to make sure there was a clear exception for stolen vehicles.

"What I found, at least in my district when stuff like this happens, too often it's a stolen vehicle that is the one that's being done for reckless driving," said Coggs.

"I don't recall. I don't believe that's in there. But to your point it should be," Milwaukee Alderman Lamont Westmoreland replied.

The city's Intergovernmental Relations Division (IRD) will now go to the state to try and get the current law changed.
