1 killed in fatal shooting near 7th and Melvina, suspects sought
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County medical examiner responded to the Harambee neighborhood on the city's north side Monday evening, Oct. 9, for a fatal shooting.
Milwaukee Police squad cars and vans, along with an ambulance, surrounded a scene near the intersection of N. 7th St. and W. Melvina St.
Police later confirmed a 36-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene around 4:35 p.m. Authorities added they are looking for two suspects, ages 17 and 18. Police did not provide a description of those suspects.
The shooting happened across the street from Green Bay Avenue School, where there's a refurbished playground.
Darnel Ford, who lives near the scene, told a CBS 58 reporter she was at home when she heard 8-9 gunshots.
Ford said she took cover at first, then looked outside. She said she saw kids and teens running away from the playground, a sight that made her question whether it was safe to keep bringing her grandchildren there.
"They always, automatically want to go to the park. It's a brand-new park, so they want to go swing and everything," Ford said. "But it's kind of scary now because I don't really want them to go over there 'cause how can they enjoy having fun when it's gunshots going on?"
