Milwaukee city attorney, treasurer announce pause on church foreclosures

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's city attorney and city treasurer responded Monday, Dec. 20, to the "tax and take" controversy involving local churches.

Pastors say the city has been taxing what are actually tax-exempt properties owned by churches.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson came to Milwaukee last month to support those pastors.

Monday, Milwaukee's city attorney and city treasurer announced that no foreclosure action will be taken against church-owned buildings until they get "clarification" on the matter.

The statement does not say how long that might take.
