MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Dozens of students from Rufus King, Shorewood and other local high schools left class Friday morning as part of a nationwide walkout.
The students gathered at Lake Park in Milwaukee to rally together in support of the “National Day of Action Against Gun Violence in Schools”.
Friday also marked the 19th anniversary of the deadly Columbine High School shooting in Colorado. The students in Milwaukee gave speeches and cheered for each other as they called for stricter gun control laws.
“Our main goal is to show that gun violence transcends past social, racial, and economic boundaries,” Organizer and Rufus King Junior Tatiana Washington said. “We’re Rufus King and Shorewood. Those are two different school climates, a suburban school and an urban school.”
After the rally at Lake Park, students walked to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to participate in peace building and social justice workshops.
