MFD responds to two house fires Sunday morning

MILWAUKEE, WI (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Fire Department responded to two separate house fires at nearly the same time Sunday morning.   The Red Cross has been called to assist the occupants of the homes damaged by the fires.

The occupants of a 2.5 story house at on S Wentworth Avenue near E Pryer were able to escape their burning home uninjured around 5:30 AM.  According Milwaukee Fire Department officials, the fire was concentrated around the chimney and then extended into the walls of the wood framed structure.   The dollar amount of damage has yet to be determined and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

About a half hour later, Milwaukee firefighters were extinguishing a fire in a 1.5 story home on N 48th Street near W Fairmont Avenue.  Fire officials say the occupants of the dwelling were not at home at the time of the fire, which was reported around 6 AM.  It is believed the fire originated in the basement of the wood framed building and then extended to the upper floors of the house.     The dollar amount of loss is not available and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
