KENOSHA COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Kenosha County Medical Examiner confirms that they have been called to a pedestrian vs. car accident near Carthage College.

It happened around 3 p.m. on Alford Park Drive near Carthage College on Thursday afternoon.

The pedestrian died from their injuries.

Carthage College has confirmed that the deceased was a student at the school. They issued the following statement,


It is with great sadness that I write to share tragic news. Earlier today, a Carthage student was struck and killed on Sheridan Road near campus. Words cannot express how deeply sorry I am for this student's family and for our community as a whole. Out of respect for the family, Carthage and the Kenosha Police Department are withholding the student's name until relatives are notified. Many among us are affected by this tragedy, and we will need to support each other in the days and weeks ahead. Carthage is providing grief counseling services to students, faculty, and staff. Carthage is a strong community, made up of members who care for the well-being of each other and for the College as a whole. I ask you to come together to offer support to those around you who need it, and to mourn the loss of a valued member of our Carthage community.

Carthage College has now identified the deceased as Griffin Schumow, an environmental science major from Illinois.

There is currently no word on what lead up to the accident. Kenosha Police say that the driver of the striking vehicle did remain on scene.
