Medical College of Wisconsin students run 150 miles to raise awareness for veteran care program

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - Geoffrey Rodriguez and Adam Plotkin are medical students at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), and both serve in the Army.

They both are currently going through clinicals at the MCW “BRAVE” program, which helps veterans with “invisible” wounds like brain injuries and PTSD.

“Getting the word out that these are normal things to go through, the invisible wounds are things that are almost normal to the jobs,” BRAVE Medical Director Gregory Burek said.

The program doesn’t require payment and provides veterans with comprehensive and classroom-like care.

Veterans coming in for help go through meetings and classes over a course of three weeks, that would usually take more than two years somewhere else.

“It would take over two years to get the number of appointments that you get between the eval and the intensive outreach patient program,” Burek said.

Rodriguez and Plotkin were looking for a way to spread awareness for the center, so they decided to do the impossible -- run 150 miles in one day.

“I had been training for something like this, like it wasn’t just like -- you don’t wake up and be like, I’m gonna run 100 miles. That’s how you end up in the hospital. And me and Geoffrey would be there treating you,” Plotkin said.

Plotkin ran 100 miles in 23 hours, and Rodriguez joined him for 50, all in the parking lot of the BRAVE building.

“It was a no-brainer for us to pair the run with the BRAVE clinic,” Rodriguez said. “I woke up that day with no question that I was gonna finish the run.”

The two fought through the cold, rain, and pain to finish and accomplish their goal to help veterans learn about the program.

“They might not know that there’s something like this that exists within our own city,” Rodriguez said. “You were literally gonna have to shoot my legs out and take me out in order for me not to finish, and still, I’d maybe crawl to the finish line.”
