MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- On Monday, Sept. 12, the Medical College of Wisconsin and government representatives broke ground for a new cancer research.
It's been a project in the making for years, with a price tag of $100 million.
"This is unique to the region and we know that this will be catalytic in our efforts to treat cancer. We don't want people from this region to have to go out of state to get world class cancer care," said Dr. John R. Raymond, CEO of the Medical College of Wisconsin.
The cancer research building will be 150,000-square-foot and five stories high. It's expected to unite about 700 researchers. According the MCW, it’s the only cancer-dedicated research facility in Milwaukee and Eastern Wisconsin, giving access to patients who can't afford or have the means to travel for treatment.
The construction on the facility is expected to be completed in 2024.
