MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police are looking for a suspect after a teenager was shot and killed on the city’s south side.

Police said it happened Saturday, Dec. 3 at 13th and Lapham, near South Division High School.

Family confirms the victim was 16-year-old Chevaz "Chevy" Collins, a sophomore at Marshall High School.

They said Collins was leaving a basketball game at South Division around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night, when he was shot several times.

"Doing what most teenagers his age do, watching a basketball game, and what he tried to do is leave, and come home to his family, and he didn't get the chance," said Jackyha Collins, Chevy's aunt.

While there aren't suspects in custody, Chevy's family believes he was targeted, and they wonder what went wrong.

"He comes from a good home. He comes from people who love him. People who care about him," Jackyha Collins said. "We have to control these kids. They are kids. They are kids, and they're dying before us."

The family is pained by the prevalence of youth violence in Milwaukee as they deal with its effects first-hand.

Grab ahold of your kids, grab them and hold them like their life depends on it, because it does," said Chevy's grandmother, Monica Collins. "Once the streets get them, it's over. You can get out the same way you got in."

The family hopes the city can come together to prevent violence and keep kids off the streets.

"We lost the village that it took to raise kids. That's the first step, is getting the village back. We've got to be there for one another," Jackyha Collins said. "Steer these kids in a better direction. Put the guns down."

CBS 58 reached out to South Division High School for a statement - they said they can't comment on a matter that happened off school property.
