Man fatally shot by Racine police following domestic violence investigation

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A man was shot and killed by a Racine police officer after he allegedly attempted to flee arrest and pointed a firearm during a confrontation.

Officers attempted to arrest the man Sunday, May 4 just after 11 p.m. near the corner of 17th and Franklin.

He was wanted in connection with a violent domestic abuse assault reported earlier that day. Police said the man fled in a vehicle and crashed nearby before exiting with a handgun.

According to a release from the Racine Police Department, the man began to raise the weapon when an officer discharged his firearm, striking him. Officers rendered aid until rescue responders arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation. Officers involved have been placed on administrative leave per department policy.
