Racine & Me: Por La Gente celebrates 50 years of supporting Racine community
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) — Por La Gente is preparing to celebrate a major milestone: 50 years of supporting Racine's Latino community and helping local students pursue higher education.
The organization will mark its 50th anniversary with a formal, black-tie gala Saturday, Oct. 2, 2027, at Festival Hall in downtown Racine.
Over the years, Por La Gente has awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships to Latino students pursuing higher education. Organizers say the anniversary gala will celebrate the organization as well as the many people who have supported its mission over the past five decades.
Ahead of the anniversary celebration, Por La Gente is also preparing for its annual Labor Day Weekend Softball Tournament, one of the organization's largest scholarship fundraisers.
The tournament will run Thursday, Sept. 3, through Sunday, Sept. 6, at Island and Lincoln parks in Racine. In addition to softball, the weekend will feature food trucks, face painting, a home run derby, drinks and other family-friendly activities.
Por La Gente will also release exclusive organization merchandise throughout the tournament weekend.
The organization is currently seeking sponsors and donations for its 50th Anniversary Gala.
