MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- This week is National Black Breastfeeding Week, and on Saturday, dozens gathered in Milwaukee for the 12th annual "Lift Up Every Baby" event.

The celebration was hosted by the African American Breastfeeding Network.

This year's theme? "Rooted in Care; Rising in Love", which organizers said is to emphasize and highlight the importance of building a strong foundation through both family and community. 

"To celebrate birth, to celebrate moms, to celebrate babies," said Dalvery Blackwell, the network's executive director and cofounder. "And so, we want to bring the community out to let them know that we do have resources."

Attendees had access to wellness workshops, free boy haircuts, and parenting and family resources.

"We also want to address the issue that we don't care for our children, and we don't love our children. I think that's a narrative that's been around for a while and what you'll see here today is families are here to show and demonstrate that they do care for their children and they love their children," Blackwell said.

Moving forward, Blackwell said she wants current and expecting mothers to know they're not alone in the Milwaukee community.

"It is an institution or a place where people that support them, that they know they can trust, for good information, for healthy birth outcome," Blackwell said. "As long as moms are having babies, we are going to continue to have an event where we lift up our babies to good health, to prosperity, to community."
