14-year-old drowns near Atwater Beach

A 14-year-old boy drowned after jumping into Lake Michigan near Atwater Park Monday evening.

Around 5:45 PM, authorities received a report for a young man who failed to surface after jumping into the lake from private property near N Lake Drive and E Lake Drive.  According to a news release from North Shore Fire/Rescue, within minutes of arriving on scene, divers from the Milwaukee Fire Department found the teenager and brought him to the surface. The teen, however, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Medical Examiner's office says the water temperature was approximately 65 degrees. The depth of the Lake at that location was seven feet with a very sandy bottom and the water was very choppy at the time of the incident.

Atwater Beach does not have lifeguards this year because there were not enough applicants.
