Local businesses carry anti-ICE signs and whistles as tensions rise in Minneapolis
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As tensions in Minneapolis continue to rise following last week’s fatal ICE related shooting, local businesses say they’re concerned about ICE’s presence in Milwaukee.
Tucked in between the many taquerias and flashing 'open' signs, there’s another poster that’s bold and hard to miss.
No ICE.
“I think it’s more of a matter of when it comes rather than if it comes, just by what we’re seeing happen every day,” said Sarah Byleen, Midtown Pharmacy manager.
Byleen has worked at Midtown Pharmacy for six years but this is the slowest it's ever been.
“I would say less Spanish clientele coming in, less Spanish speaking clientele,” said Byleen. “I think it’s fear. I think it’s fear to go out.”
Byleen put up the “No ICE” sign early last year – but a local immigration organization says expect to see more.
“A few thousands for sure,” said Deisy Espana with Voces de la Frontera.
Voces de la Frontera says the goal is to inform people of what ice can and can’t do.
The Immigration Customs Enforcement Agency’s website says they do not need a judicial warrant to enter, but Voces says that’s not the case when it comes to private businesses.
“Federal agents cannot enter your property without a warrant signed by a judge,” said Espana.
On the east side – at Goodland Home and Goods, people are picking up free whistles intended to alert people when ice is in the area.
“I feel hopeless, but taking the whistle, but kinda helps me feel we can give power back to the people,” said Sam J.
Residents say it’s small but mighty actions that bring a community together.
“I’ve seen a lot of people come in and say that’s really good. I’m glad you guys have that out there. A lot of support both from our Spanish speaking population and English-speaking population,” said Byleen.
