Local bars prepare for World Cup viewing parties
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Although the USA does not have a team in this year's World Cup, plenty of people in southeast Wisconsin will be watching when the competition starts Thursday.
Nomad Nacional will be hosting a World Cup viewing party every day throughout the tournament, showing each and every game on the jumbotron.
Dozens are expected to come out and enjoy the games.
Milwaukee bars and restaurants are gearing up for the World Cup kickoff on Thursday.
"We're pumped. We cannot wait, we've been planning this thing for over a year," said Nomad 2018 Fanzone Organizer Matt Sievers.
This year, the games are being played in Russia but in 2026, North America will be hosting the World Cup for the first time in more than 20 years.
"That's fantastic. I wish it was less than eight years away to be honest," said Three Lions Pub Co-Owner Christopher Tinker.
With the time difference in Russia, the games will be airing in the U.S in the mornings and early afternoons.
"It'd be nice to get better prime time," Tinker said.
"There's diehard fans all over the place so people will come out to support their team," said Sievers.
In 2014, the World Cup drew thousands of fans to Milwaukee viewing parties but some are worried the crowds might be less this year with the early games. Plus, the U.S. team not making it this year.
"It definitely is going to hurt a little bit because obviously everyone is very patriotic in America," Tinker said.
Three Lions Pub in Shorewood will be offering free breakfast for weekday games to try to encourage fans to wake up early.
"Even if you're not into soccer or football, just the passion of just being around people that really care, you'll see some historical moments in this World Cup, that's a guarantee," Tinker said.
Three Lions will be holding a World Cup Street Party on Friday, June 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the final match beginning at 10 a.m. It will include a jumbotron viewing of the final, outdoor grilling with outdoor bars, a kids area with different activities and face painting, entertainment, 106.9 Live Radio DJ, and prizes that will be raffled off.
