Lifelong renter becomes homeowner

-It only took $1 to turn a lifelong renter into a first time home buyer thanks to the City of Milwaukee's \"Lease to Own\" Program.

The program takes existing tenants in tax foreclosed houses and puts them on the path to home ownership by providing counseling.

If the tenant can prove they are financially stabled and agree to maintain their home, it's theirs for $1.

Monteria Tillman says it's an opportunity she couldn't pass up.

\"Words can't explain,\" Tillman told CBS 58 News. \"I have a 9-year-old son and no no words,\" she trailed off again. Her smile becoming broader when she then declared, \"This means the world to me!\"

The city pays to bring the homes up to code and addresses long term maintenance concerns before selling the properties.
