Woman injured in Racine shooting; standoff with barricaded suspect ends after more than 7 hours
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- An armed standoff in Racine is now over, more than seven-and-a-half hours after a gunman first barricaded himself inside a home.
The suspect was rushed out of the home on a stretcher at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, bringing an end to a standoff that started shortly after 11 a.m. and shut down a neighborhood for the entire day.
It started when a woman was shot multiple times Tuesday morning. She was taken to an area hospital and her injuries at that time were described as non-life-threatening.
Police would not say what the relationship was between shooter and victim. The gunman then barricaded himself inside a home on Reschke Avenue. For hours, police tried to get him to come out; for a time, they were in communication with him over the phone.
They fired flashbangs in an attempt to disorient him, turned on their sirens at times, and used a megaphone to order him outside.
Nothing seemed to work.
Then, shortly after 6 p.m., the SWAT vehicle retreated, and officers armed it with a battering ram.
At 6:30, there were several loud explosions at the home, and the man was wheeled out to an ambulance.
Earlier in the day, Racine police said the long wait was by design.
“To get them to cooperate as peacefully as we can," said Sgt. Alicia Mitchell, Racine Police Department. "Come to a resolution for this case. So, if we can get them to come out on their own, that’s ideal. So that’s why we wait so long to… that’s why we’ve been out here for so many hours. Trying to get them to cooperate with us and for it to go as smoothly as possible.”
