Jury finds man guilty of shooting, injuring Kenosha K-9 Deputy Riggs

KENOSHA COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A jury found an Illinois man guilty Thursday, March 30, after shooting a K-9 deputy while trying to escape authorities.

Allan Brown, 35, was convicted of the following:

  • First-degree recklessly endangering safety (3 counts)
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon
  • Striking a police animal, causing injury
  • Mistreatment of a law enforcement animal
  • Failure to comply with officers
  • Driving or operating a vehicle without consent
  • Attempted escape

Chicago police say in 2021, Brown shot and killed a man at a bus stop before carjacking and killing another individual and fleeing to Kenosha in the stolen vehicle.

Kenosha County deputies encountered Brown while responding to Benson Corners gas station as part of the investigation. A high-risk traffic stop was initiated, and Brown fled from the vehicle.

Deputies unleashed K-9 Riggs, who captured Brown, but was shot in the forehead by the suspect while taking him down. Authorities returned fire, striking Brown in the stomach and leg.

K-9 Riggs underwent surgery at an Illinois hospital and has since recovered

A sentencing hearing has been set for May 25.
