'It's just shocking': West Allis home set on fire as homeowner slept inside

Kayleigh Werra

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- West Allis police are searching for a man who set a house on fire in the middle of the night.

Burn marks cover the side of Kayleigh Werra’s West Allis home.

“I don’t understand, like, the intent. What he was trying to prove or trying to do? I noticed that my house was damaged, and I thought maybe lightning had struck," said Werra, who lives near 60th and Lincoln.

That wasn’t the case. On Sunday morning, shortly after midnight, surveillance shows somebody intentionally lit her house on fire.

“It’s just shocking. I didn’t expect it. My mind never even went to the fact that someone could’ve tried to set my house on fire,” said Werra.

The flames burned fast but didn’t spread far.

“I was scared. I’m glad my camera picked it up. I’m glad the damage was limited to the outside of the house,” said Werra.

Werra says the person in the video was wearing gloves as they poured liquid along the side of her home.

“Nobody walks around with, like, a can of gas. He has gloves on, too,” said Werra.

West Allis police say they’re investigating the incident. Werra says she’s left with questions and no clear answers.

“It feels kinda random or targeted to a previous owner, but I really don’t know,” said Werra.

Werra says she’s just grateful for her neighbors who called for help and have continued to check in.

“It’s just a great neighborhood and I’m really thankful to have neighbors like I have,” said Werra.

Anyone with information should reach out to the West Allis Police Department.
