‘It's far too common’: Push for hospital safety continues after deadly emergency room shooting at Aurora Sinai
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 40-year-old man is dead after he was shot in the Aurora Sinai emergency room early Monday morning.
Christopher Robinson died Monday afternoon.
A 38-year-old victim was also shot but is expected to survive, and police arrested a different 38-year-old in connection to the shooting.
“It’s devastating, honestly, it’s far too common right now,” Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals (WFNHP) Executive Director Jamie Lucas said. “There’s been, over the years, just seems like escalating acts of violence in health care settings.”
WFNHP is pushing for more safety in hospitals and working on a bill that would require a certain staff-to-patient ratio to increase safety.
“We've had multiple members almost die at their jobs through acts of workplace violence,” Lucas said. “We’ve seen too many instances of violence, and that disrupts, obviously, the healing process. It’s also a place where people go to work.”
Lucas says hospitals across the state are still safe to go to for care, but another tragic event calls for more safety measures.
“I think hospitals are still a safe place to receive care,” Lucas said. “To have one so close to home is really rattling.”
Aurora Sinai sent a statement to CBS 58 News Tuesday night, saying:
"As we continue our internal review and partner with local law enforcement as they actively investigate this event, we are focused on making sure our teammates have the support and resources they need during this difficult time."
