Investigation underway for inmate who died at Manitowoc County Jail

MANITOWOC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 36-year-old inmate was found dead while an officer was conducting routine rounds at the Manitowoc County Jail, Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7:49 a.m.

Officials identified the decedent as Justin Hall from the City of Manitowoc. Hall's autopsy is still pending. The incident remains under investigation.

According to officials, a Manitowoc County Correctional Officer noticed an inmate laying on a mattress in an awkward position, which drew the attention of the officer. The inmate was unresponsive and officers began live-saving efforts. Paramedics from the Manitowoc Fire Department also helped. The efforts were not successful and the 26-year-old man was pronounced dead at the jail.

The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office was requested by the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office to assist with the death investigation. They were on scene by mid-morning. Outside agencies are requested to assist when death occurs in correctional facilities. 

The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office will be the lead investigating agency in this case.
