Illinois Grandfather’s Puts Plea To Save His Grandson on His Truck

MARSEILLES (CBS CHICAGO) — In this age of social media, it’s easy to spread the word about every conceivable cause.

But one man is taking an old fashioned approach to save the life of his grandson.

As Jim Williams reports, this is not what you see everywhere.

Charlie’s grandson, Matthew Hays, is only 25. “I have a whole life ahead of me,” he said.

Matthew has been here before. As a little boy he had kidney disease. When he was three, he needed a kidney. His mother, Leslie Szobar, was the donor.

But now, four times a day at home, Matthew is back on dialysis. His kidney is failing.

“We have had such an amazing outpouring of support from everybody,” mom said.

But no donor yet.

“My hope is that people see the truck and I get a match, get kidney and that it’ll last 22 more years like this one did,” Matthew said.

“I’d like to keep him here a little longer,” Charlie Morecheiser said.

The family has set up a fundraising campaign online.
