MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 41-year-old Milwaukee mother was killed in a crash Tuesday night, Jan. 13, on the city’s south side after police say a speeding driver lost control and hit a tree.

Police say that Elaine Corbitt, 41, was a passenger in a car when the 60-year-old driver, traveling at excessive speed, lost control and struck a tree near 94th and Wilbur around 6:50 p.m.

Corbitt died at the scene.

Her brother, Michael Corbitt, said the loss has left their family devastated.

“She loved her kids and we loved her, she was the life of the party,” he said.

Elaine Corbitt was a mother of five. Michael Corbitt described his sister as a fun and loving person.

“A beautiful young woman that tragically got taken from us too early,” he said.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken into custody.

Michael Corbitt said the circumstances of his sister’s death are still difficult to process.

“It’s sad that we had to tragically lose our sister,” he said. “I didn’t think I would lose her like this. I didn’t think we would lose our baby sister to a horrific car accident.”

He said reckless driving is something he sees too often and urged drivers to slow down.

“This is called a lesson for the city and it’s a lesson for all the drivers out there,” he said. “It’s a lesson for anyone who thinks a vehicle is safe to travel at high speeds.”

Michael Corbitt said there are still unanswered questions. He said he does not know where his sister was going or who she was with at the time of the crash.

He added that when deadly crashes happen, the impact reaches far beyond the scene.

“Wake up man because our family is what counts in our community and when we lose lives because of a senseless reckless driving incident, it’s sad,” he said.

The family said they are now focused on honoring Elaine Corbitt’s memory.

“We’re going to do something special for her because she was a special person and we’re going to make sure the community remembers her,” he said.

The family is putting together a GoFundMe to help support Elaine Corbitt’s five children and cover funeral costs.
