Hundreds fill Milwaukee's lakefront for 25th annual Run/Walk to Irish Fest to support the Arthritis Foundation

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Hundreds filled Milwaukee's lakefront Saturday morning for the 25th annual Run/Walk to Irish Fest in support of the Arthritis Foundation.

One in four adults has arthritis -- but with more than 100 types, anyone from kids to seniors can have the disease.

Wisconsin is one of only 10 states to offer a residential camp for children to raise awareness about juvenile arthritis, and money raised from the event goes toward providing those resources.

"We get about 65-75 kids each summer that go to camp, they learn how to manage their disease, just make friendships with other kids who are going through what they're going through," said Sara Peterson, the executive director for the Arthritis Foundation of Wisconsin. "We don't have to charge them a cent through all of the funds raised through events like this."

Their fundraising goal this year is $95,000 dollars. So far, they're a little over halfway.

"As a person who has some arthritis, and my mom does, it's gratifying to help a cause like that," said Sue Ruedinger, who came out with her daughter, Erin Siegel, and her two grandchildren, Julia, 11, and Luke, 9.

"16 years now and we just have done it every year, and it was a great bonding experience for us two to do it and as the kids have gotten older, they've started to participate too," Siegel said.

Luke told CBS 58's Ellie Nakamoto-White his favorite part of the event is spending time with his family, plus "walking outside is fun."

As for Julia?

This is her sixth year participating and for any other children who are interested, she offered this encouraging message.

"You can push through and it's really fun like once you get to the end and just know you've done something hard, and you did it well."
