Hometown political expert weighs in on Trump's arraignment
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Thursday, Aug. 3, former President Donald Trump's arraignment came with a mountain of questions about how the federal courts would handle his case.
CBS 58 News spoke with a hometown political expert who said there is no clear answer to this unprecedented and historical lawsuit.
"I think, you can spin out a half a dozen different scenarios of what happens from here on. In one scenario, there's a trial before the Republican nomination is locked up, and based on the results of the trial, he sort of wins and claims vindication, or he's convicted. But playing out the scenario he could theoretically be convicted of something and not yet be sentenced and still run for president. Or hypothetically he could be convicted and sentenced and be in prison. Hypothetically. And still, be running for president," said Mordecai Lee, Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Aug. 23, Milwaukee is scheduled to host the first Republican presidential debate for the 2024 presidential election.
Despite Trump's legal woes, the former commander and chief is still vying for the world's most powerful office.
Lee went on to say, we are likely to see Trump take the stage here in the Cream City as he continues to make his run for the oval office.
Lee said the Badger State is not only poised to determine the possible political future of the country but Trump's pending freedom.
"Wisconsin as a state in the last two presidential elections has determined the (presidential) winner by less than one percent of the vote out of three million votes cast that’s practically a statistical fluke," said Lee.
"There will be juries and there will be trials. But ultimately the voters of Wisconsin will be the jury. Because if he's the Republican nominee and the voters of Wisconsin will decide who wins Wisconsin for the presidential election, and we will likely be the state that puts the candidate over the top and becomes president," said Lee.
If Trump is not convicted or tried, and he wins the 2024 election, he would be immune to any further indictments or trials for 4 years, while he's the sitting president.
