Homes Evacuated in South Milwaukee After Car Crash Causes Gas Leak

The South Milwaukee Police Department confirms to CBS 58 that it received numerous 911 calls Monday evening for a a gas leak near 8th and Milwaukee.

A two car accident occurred after an 84-year-old man hit the accelerator instead of brake and hit the house causing the leak. The man was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.

A two block radius around the home has been evacuated due to the leak. Neighbors report smelling a strong gas smell and headaches.

The South Milwaukee Fire Department and We Energies also responded to the scene. 

"The accident was a two car accident and it appears the driver of the vehicle that struck the house accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the break," said Officer in Charge-Robert Wentz .  "The driver of the vehicle that struck the house had only minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.  Nobody else was injured."

 The gas was shut off and people were allowed to go back in their homes after 90 minutes.
