'He was one of my kids': Officer Kendall Corder's former supervisor remembers the fallen hero

Milwaukee Police Department

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Over the past few days, friends, community members, and even strangers have shared stories about how fallen Milwaukee Police Officer Kendall Corder impacted their lives. For the first time, CBS 58 spoke to someone who worked alongside Officer Corder every single day.

The flag outside Kathryn Anderer’s house is flying at half-staff. The former District 2 supervisor may be retired now, but she still carries this grief at home.

“You’re part of the family. We grieve together. We cry together. We’re a big, blue family,” said Anderer. “It’s a tragedy. To me, he seemed like he was one of my kids and I looked out for him that way.”

For three years, Anderer and Officer Corder worked alongside each other every single day.

“You hate to say you have your favorites on the job and you do have your favorites, and I think the shift knew Kendall was one of my favorites,” said Anderer.

Responding to a call is never easy, but Anderer says Corder always found a way to make it better.

“We’re ultimately going to homes where this is the worst day of someone’s life,” said Anderer. “He would hate me that I said he’s sensitive, but he was sensitive for as big as he was. He towered over me, and he was a sensitive man.”

Now, Anderer says she’ll find a way to do the same for his family.

“We all lost a brother, a friend, a colleague. And he was so much more. It’s just sad,” said Anderer.

During National Police Week in May, Anderer and Officer Corder's family will fly to Washington D.C. as the fallen officer’s name will be etched into the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall.

“Now knowing that it’s my friend and someone I trusted, and he trusted me, it’s gonna be difficult to help plan this trip,” said Anderer.

Anderer says she’ll always remember her friend for his smile and his service to this city.

“That’s Kendall. That’s all I can say. That’s the person I knew,” said Anderer.

GoFundMe has been created by Anderer. The funds will help Officer Corder’s family and friends attend the memorial event in May.
