Gun Violence Archive: At least 389 mass shootings took place in 2019

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been more mass shootings than days so far this year. 

They say there have been at least 389 mass shootings in 2019.

Wisconsin has been trying to beef up school security.

A state task force has given about $100 million to nearly 600 Wisconsin schools.

Experts say school resource officers are the first line of defense.

"Officers are trained and take the oath to protect others before themselves," said Eugene Reyes of MATC. "The officer should be thinking where is the threat, locating the threat, and possibly eliminating the threat."

The National Education Association says you should reassure your child they are safe. They recommend setting aside time to talk to your child. Experts also say to tailor your talk to a level that's age appropriate. They also say to review your school's safety procedures ahead of time.
