Growing Power Plants Trees in Oak Creek

It is the largest organic urban orchard in the United States.

On Friday a ceremonial planting to celebrate its success.

A fruit tree was put in the ground in Oak Creek with hopes it'll bear fruit in three years.

The event celebrates the unique partnership between the government, non-profits and private businesses.

Fruit from the Growing Power orchard will be given to schools, the community and Hunger Task Force.

"We need to start growing food closer to where people live. It doesn't make sense to be shipping food from the state of Washington, California, or further away or overseas to feed our populations,” said Will Allen, founder CEO’s Growing Power.

The fruit trees were donated by a nursery in St. Louis.

They have already been planted across eight acres of county land.

Growing Power's facility is on Silver Spring Drive Milwaukee.
