Greenfield police officer fatally strikes woman lying in road during welfare check

GREENFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- An investigation is underway after officials say a Greenfield police officer ran over a woman lying in the road Thursday, July 27, leading to her death.

Officers received a call for a welfare check near 34th and Holmes just before 6:30 p.m.

Police say the responding officer did not know the woman was lying in the road, and accidentally drove over her before calling for an ambulance and rendering aid.

The 42-year-old Milwaukee woman -- identified by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office as Tracie Dorpat -- was taken to Froedtert Hospital where she later died.

The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team will be investigating the incident, and Wisconsin State Patrol will be reconstructing the accident scene.

Officials say the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave.
