Glendale passes new Airbnb regulations 2 weeks after Memorial Day shooting
GLENDALE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- In the early morning hours of Monday, May 25, Glendale police responded to a shots fired call in the 100 block of W. Riverview Drive.
According to police, a 22-year-old was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Neighbors tell CBS 58 the shooting occurred at a home that was being rented out as an Airbnb destination.
Margie Groh lives across the street and woke up to gunshots.
“Looked out the window, saw a lot of commotion, a lot of people yelling at each other,” Groh said. “I could see people running everywhere, I have no idea how many, I mean dozens, people running in all directions, there were cars tearing down the street.”
On Monday night, June 8, the Glendale Common Council voted 4-2 in favor of an ordinance that would limit the use of rental homes throughout the city.
The ordinance prohibits stays of six nights or less, requires proof of liability insurance to operate, and requires someone to be available 24/7 to respond to emergencies at the Airbnb location.
According to the city, there are currently 17 of these properties in Glendale --13 of them do not have a required license and have been asked to stop operating, including the house where the Memorial Day shooting occurred.
“We recognize that some of these may exist if they follow all the rules, but we’re gonna make sure that every rule that we are allowed to put in place, we are putting in place as a municipality,” Glendale Mayor Bryan Kennedy said.
The Common Council also approved a 1% increase on the tax applied to rental homes.
“As long as it’s within certain limitations, you do what you want to do on your property. As long as you’re not hurting anyone. Now of course this had a gun involved, that’s a whole other ballgame,” Groh said.
