Glendale man charged in homicide accused of shooting, driving over woman near Deer District
MCSO MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Glendale man is charged with first degree intentional homicide in the shooting that killed 47-year-old Sharita Barber near Deer District Feb. 28.
Officers encountered two people rendering aid to the victim upon their arrival, according to the criminal complaint, however the victim died of her injuries.
The complaint says one of the witnesses who provided aid told investigators they were leaving Turner Hall when they heard a "pop" three times, then heard someone say a person was "down" in the street.
Prosecutors say a Milwaukee Police Department pole camera captured the incident.
The criminal complaint describes the following series of events in the footage: The victim's vehicle is parked in front of a vehicle driven by the defendant-identified as 26-year-old Demetris Riley- on Vel Phillips Avenue. The victim walks to her car and begins to reverse, backing lightly into Riley's vehicle. A passenger in Riley's vehicle gets out, bangs on the victim's vehicle, and approaches her passenger door; Riley gets out of the vehicle and approaches the driver's side. All three are seen standing and talking at the rear of the victim's vehicle when Riley punches her car window. The victim retreats to her vehicle and arms herself, then appears to gesture at her vehicle while pointing her gun at Riley.
The complaint says camera phone footage captures the victim stating, "You can't pay for that. I want your life."
Surveillance video reportedly goes on to show Riley's passenger raise her arm and fire two shots at the victim, causing her to fall. The complaint says the victim remains motionless for the rest of the footage; it says Riley takes the gun from his passenger and fires at least four times at the victim before getting back into his vehicle and running the victim over, fleeing the scene.
A medical examiner's report concluded the victim was still alive when EMS arrived at the scene, when she was struck by the second round of gunfire, and when she was run over.
Court documents say Riley turned himself in on March 2 and made a statement to authorities, stating that his passenger defended him by shooting the victim. He said he thought the victim had "people" coming, based on statements she made, and that she began reaching for her gun when he fired more shots.
He allegedly said he was concerned for his safety, and the victim was laying in his way, so he drove over her.
