Frost likely Friday morning with lows dropping into the 30s

NOW: Frost likely Friday morning with lows dropping into the 30s
NEXT:

We have had more mild mornings than chilly ones lately, but that will change a bit Friday morning as lows drop into the 30s. This is right around the time of year that many inland and northern counties see their last freeze of the season. For Milwaukee and some southeast lakeside locations that last freeze typically happens at the end of April.

So far this year our last freeze in Milwaukee was back on April 12 when we dropped to 30 degrees. That's about ten days earlier than the average and one of the earliest last freezes we've had over the last ten years. 2020 was a bit of an outlier with a last freeze on May 9th, otherwise most of our last freezes have happened in the third and fourth week of April.

While a widespread freeze doesn't look likely Friday morning, some inland counties could get close with lows dropping into the middle 30s. Lakeside areas will be a bit warmer with low temps there in the mid to upper 30s.

Frost typically forms with temps under 36 degrees, a bit of moisture, clear sky and a light wind. We have all of those ingredients in place for Friday morning so a widespread frost can be expected away from the lakefront. The National Weather Service has mentioned that a frost advisory will probably be issued for Friday morning. After Friday morning we could have a cooler morning to start Mother's Day on Sunday but not anywhere close to frost conditions. The rest of the morning hours over the next week look pretty mild in the 40s and 50s for lows.
