MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- While an entire city mourns the loss of Officer Kendall Corder, the tears carry more weight for those who were closest to him.

Glenn Kirby Jr.

Milwaukee Police Officer Kendall Corder made the ultimate sacrifice after he was shot near 25th and Garfield Thursday, June 26, and died Sunday.

Glenn Kirby Jr. says he was at Froedtert hospital for Corder's three-day battle against his injuries from the shooting.

“He fought. He fought hard," Kirby said. "The room was intense. His family took me in as their own, so my goal was to be strong for everybody in the room.”

Kirby met Corder in high school as they competed against each other in football. Kirby said they became close over the years, to the point where he considered him a brother.

“He was my light. My mentor. He was my console.”

Kirby said he has spent the last few days in communication with family members about funeral plans.

He said they are all planning to memorialize a man who was a rock to family and friends.

“They always say the good ones pass away young; it sucks," Kirby said. "He didn’t deserve that.”
