Forward Latino launches campaign to highlight intersection of faith and the treatment of immigrants
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- People across the country are protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis.
Here at home, people are getting ready for the possibility of increased immigration enforcement in Milwaukee.
In response to increased immigration enforcement in cities like Chicago and Minneapolis, Forward Latino launched a new campaign meant to make people aware of the fear felt by immigrants in our community.
At I-94 and Highway 16 is a new billboard with a message meant to generate sympathy for immigrants in Milwaukee and the U.S.
"Just simply go online and you see, and you hear the hate that our neighbors are feeling for one another, and that's not right, that's not what Christ wants," said Darryl Morin, Forward Latino national president.
Morin says immigrants in Milwaukee are preparing for an immigration crackdown, although, any increase in immigration enforcement has not been confirmed by local or federal authorities.
"There's just so much fear right now; we want to do everything we can," said Morin.
This campaign comes days after Minneapolis mother of three Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent.
Federal authorities say the immigration officer feared for his life when Good tried to drive away from a traffic stop.
Morin says he wants people in our community to be ready for whatever happens.
"If you see a detention taking place, don't interfere with an investigation, don't obstruct a detention, but videotape and take photographs of everything you can and you can send those to us," said Morin.
He says video evidence isn't anti-law enforcement but helps uphold them to the law.
"Sadly, we've seen some things that have been quite gruesome, brutal, but without that evidence, we wouldn't be able to do anything to help the family," Morin explained.
Morin also says they're helping families in need with legal representation and pastoral care.
