JEFFERSON COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A fire has heavily damaged the American Legion post in the Jefferson County Village of Palmyra.
Village firefighters were answering an accident call when they got the alarm just before noon Wednesday, May 13.
When they reached the post, smoke was coming from the front of the building. They had to knock down ceilings and punch holes in the roof to put out the fire, but no one was hurt.
The deputy chief says this fire is a big blow to the village.
"They have always been huge supporters of the community, huge supporters of public safety, and we are...it breaks our heart to see what happened to this very old, very important piece of Palmyra," Deputy Chief Dylan Callas said.
Deputy Chief Callas says whether or not the building is a total loss will be determined by the building inspector.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
