MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Littering in the city of Milwaukee will hit your wallet harder than ever, thanks to a new fine that went into effect Monday.
City leaders spoke about the decision to raise the fine for littering to $500. It's part of a push by the city to clean up Milwaukee's neighborhoods.
Alderman Russell Stamper spoke at the event, saying it's about more than just picking up the trash.
"I believe that we can have neighborhoods where residents can live in dignity, with respect, and peace and most of all feel proud of where they live," 15th District Ald. Russell Stamper said.
The previous fine was $50. Those who cannot afford the fine can often do community service.
